Agency Strategic Planning

Ignition works with agencies to help them define their strategic plan and align their organization with not just best practices, but what we call “next practices” – the things progressive firms are doing to reinvent themselves successfully for the future.

Following is the basic framework for how the process works, although any of these steps can be modified to meet the specific needs of the agency:

1. Background information.  Ignition requests written background information about the agency via an easy-to-use online form.  Ignition studies the agency website plus other appropriate information or documents provided by the agency.

2. Phone interviews.  Ignition interviews by phone several key agency people, as recommended by agency management.

3. Online survey. Ignition fields an online survey among the entire staff.  This survey, called “Leading Indicators of Agency Success,” is based on Ignition’s years of studying the practices of successful agencies.  The factors measured in the survey are those that not only measure agency success – they predict it.

4. Strategic planning session.  Ignition conducts an in-person strategic planning session with the agency (either management or entire staff).  The discussion will be captured both on flipcharts and on digital documents.

5. Online summary and collaboration tool.  Ignition will set up a password-protected online intranet and will post both a written summary of the session along with any other relevant documents or notes.  This intranet will stay active for the coming year and will allow any authorized users from the agency to review and collaborate on agency strategic planning initiatives.

Framework for strategic planning session

Again, the specific agenda for the planning session will be customized based on the specific needs of the agency, but following is a general outline that can serve as a starting point:

“State of the agency” review by an agency principal

Presentation by Ignition of results from “Leading Indicators of Agency Success”

Discussion and goal-setting in six key areas;

  • Positioning
  • Product
  • People
  • Promotion
  • Process
  • Place

Prioritization of initiatives and action plan
